Relationship between Nonsuicidal Self-injury and Attachment and Attribution Styles in Adolescent Patients with Mood Disorder

Relationship between Nonsuicidal Self-injury and Attachment and Attribution Styles in Adolescent Patients with Mood Disorder

Abstract

Objective To explore the relationships among non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), attachment, and attribution styles in adolescents with mood disorders. Methods A total of 232 adolescents aged 10 to 24 years with mood disorders who were about to be discharged from the psychiatry department of a hospital in Guangzhou were selected by the convenience sampling method. The Ottawa Self-injury Inventory-Chinese Revised Version(OIS-CRV), experiences in closed relationships scale(ECRS), attributional styles questionnaire(ASQ), 17-item Hamilton depression rating scale(HAMD-17), and the Young Manic rating scale(YMRS)were used to measure their NSSI, attachment, attribution style, depression, and mania symptoms. Regression equations were used to test the mediating effect. Results The detection rate of NSSI among the 232 patients was 78.4%;Attachment avoidance was a negative predictor of positive situation attribution (β = -0.404, P = 0.031) and a positive predictor of negative situation attribution (β = 0.430, P = 0.031), and attachment anxiety was a positive predictor of negative situation attribution (β = 0.659, P < 0.001); Negative situation attribution was a risk factor for NSSI (OR = 1.191, P = 0.026) Negative situation attribution plays a mediating role in attachment avoidance, attachment anxiety, and NSSI. Conclusion Adolescents with mood disorders' attachment influences NSSI through attribution style.
